What is Water-shiatsu?

Water-shiatsu is a method of relaxation conducted in warm water. The roots of Water-shiatsu lie in the eastern massage technique of Shiatsu. This technique works with pressure points and simple massage techniques, as well as, stretching to relieve stress and muscle pain. Water-shiatsu is focused on total relaxation.

Movements in warm water are different than on land: the pressure from the water is equal on all sides and the water supports the body. These factors have a relaxing effect and unique Water-shiatus movements and stretches that are impossible to realize on land can be realized.

Development of Water-shiatsu

As a result of the hectic nature of society today, then need for relaxation will increase. Water-shiatsu is beneficial for everyone with a need to relax. This can be people with stressful jobs but also people who are fighting with temporary mental or physical aliments. Water-shiatsu is however not a therapy.

Water-shiatsu has been developed in the 80’s and 90’s by American Harold Dull. Harold Dull studied Zen Shiatsu in Japan. Through his studies he gained knowledge in meridians (energy channels in the bodies), stretching of the channels, as well as, the Chinese Five Element Theory. After he returned from Japan he began to apply his knowledge in the form of special stretches and massage techniques in the warm water springs present at  Harbin Hot Springs. He combined the Zen techniques with the floating and rhythmic properties of the water. Harold returned to Japan to share his knowledge and Water-shiatsu is now being practiced throughout the world.

Further developments of Zen Shiatsu were made by its’ founder  Shizuto Masunaga (1925 – 1981).
